Diabetes Distress Test
Diabetes Distress is the emotional distress that results from living with diabetes and the burden of relentless daily self-management. Diabetes Distress is sometimes mistaken for, and is more common than, depression.
For adults with type 2 diabetes (regardless of medication regimen), we suggest taking the T2-Diabetes Distress Assessment. The recently developed system consists of 29 items and yields 2 sets of scores: an 8-item CORE DISTRESS SCORE, reflecting overall diabetes-related emotional distress, and a 21-item set of seven SOURCE SCORES, reflecting seven different potential sources of distress.

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders in which either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to regulate blood glucose, or the body cannot use insulin effectively. This results in hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia leads to damage, dysfunction, and failure of various organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels. Diabetes is diagnosed when the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is 6.5% (48mmol/mol) or higher, and 5.7-6.4% (39-46mmol/mol) is considered pre-diabetes.
Diabetes mellitus is a global health problem with a worldwide prevalence of 8.8% and is associated with multiple comorbidities and high healthcare costs. The Center of Disease Control reports that 10.5% of the US population have diabetes and 34.5% pre-diabetes. Many of those with diabetes are underdiagnosed. (26.9 million people diagnosed and 7.3 million un or underdiagnosed.)
Of the different types of diabetes categorized, the most common is type 2, in which the body produces insufficient insulin or cannot use it effectively. The focus of this condition is lifestyle-driven, and its causes are largely modifiable, particularly with diet.
Diet as a lifestyle factor plays an important role in treating diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends an individualized medical nutrition therapy for glycemic and lipid management.
